A note from Pastor Jennifer Applegate

March 29, 2024

Meanwhile, standing near the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing beside her, he said to his mother, “Woman, here is your son.”Then he said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home.

After this, when Jesus knew that all was now finished, he said (in order to fulfill the scripture), “I am thirsty.” A jar full of sour wine was standing there. So they put a sponge full of the wine on a branch of hyssop and held it to his mouth. When Jesus had received the wine, he said, “It is finished.” Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. – John 19: 24 – 30

Dear Friends,

Today is Good Friday. It is a somber day in the life of the Christian year. It is a day to reflect upon the events 2000 years ago. Where did it all go wrong? What part did each person play? What does this mean for us, today? I hope that you take at least a moment today to consider what Christ means for you. What would your life be like if he weren’t in it? How would it be different?

Please don’t discount or skip over this day. Sit in the discomfort. Stand near the cross with the three Mary’s and the beloved disciple. Let yourself imagine what it’s like to lose someone very near and dear to you. The time you spend today will enhance the experience of Easter. I promise.

I’ll see you tonight at our joint Good Friday worship service at 7 p.m. held at William Street UMC. As a reminder, the Easter Vigil service held tomorrow at 7 p.m. at Zion UCC will be outside. Bring a chair and dress for weather. If it is raining, it will be held inside the church.

Then, I’ll see you Easter Sunday! Worship Services are:

8 a.m. Sunrise held in the Fellowship Hall (it’s going to be too cold to be in the Grotto). In-person only.

10:25 a.m. Worship in the Sanctuary. In person and online at https://www.facebook.com/WilliamStreetUMC/.  There will be children’s activities before the 10:25 a.m. service and an Easter Egg/Scavenger Hunt after the service.

Pastor Jennifer

P.S. I will be on vacation next week. I’m hoping for decent weather so I can work in the yard and ready it for Spring!

There will not be a pastor’s note next Friday.
