A note from Pastor Jennifer Applegate

March 22, 2024

As he rode along, people kept spreading their cloaks on the road. Now as he was approaching the path down from the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the deeds of power that they had seen, saying,

“Blessed is the king
who comes in the name of the Lord!
Peace in heaven,
and glory in the highest heaven!”

Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, order your disciples to stop.” He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the stones would shout out.” – Luke 19: 36 – 40

Dear Friends,

This Sunday marks the beginning of my favorite week in the Christian year. It is Palm/Passion Sunday. We’ll begin the service standing with the crowds as Jesus rode in on the donkey. Our palms will wave in the air and our voices will sing Hosanna! We’ll end by standing at the foot of the cross.

I met with Rev. Katie Osier, Lead Pastor at Asbury UMC, and Rev. Beth Gedert, Lead Pastor at Zion UCC this week to finalize the plans for our joint Holy Week services. I am so excited about these worship services. They are a way for our churches to strengthen the collaborative spirit which began with Intertwine Youth Ministry.

Maundy Thursday is a service to remember Jesus’ last evening, including the last meal shared with his disciples. It is during this meal that Jesus instituted Holy Communion and summed up his entire ministry by saying, “Love one another.” This worship service will be held at 7 p.m. at Asbury UMC.

Good Friday is a service to reflect on the last moments of Jesus’ life, all the way until his last breath. It is a somber and contemplative service. This worship service will be held at 7 p.m. at William Street. Music will be led by Chad Schneider and the Chancel Choir.

Easter Vigil is a service to wait and watch for signs of resurrection. It will be held outdoors around a fire. This worship service will be held at 7 p.m. at Zion UCC. Please dress for the weather and bring a lawn chair. Pastor Beth shares that this service always ends with a party and to expect smores!

After moving through the weightiness of Holy week, we finally arrive at the big celebration – Easter! William Street will celebrate Christ’s resurrection at two worship services.

I look forward to spending the next week with you. I’ll see you this Sunday, March 24 at 10:25 a.m. in person or online at https://www.facebook.com/WilliamStreetUMC/
